Hollywood Shocker: Well-Loved Celebrity Finally Comes Out of the Closet

Entertainment news was rocked to the foundations today by a bombshell confession absolutely no one saw coming. The announcement was unexpected for so many reasons, but perhaps in particular because of the famous athlete's quote from 2006, when he said, "I don't feel the need to express my sexual being because it's not part of my sport and it's private."

He's a three-time U.S. National Champion (2004–2006), the 2008 World's bronze medalist, a two-time Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, and the 2001 World Junior Champion.

And now, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you, ladies, but ...

Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir is gay.

I'm just ... I'm just going to give you a moment to absorb the news.

Weir has shared excerpts from his upcoming memoir, Welcome to My World, in which he comes out as a homosexual. Why has he decided to share this personal side of himself? He writes,

"With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story."

He says he knew from an early age that his sexuality was different, saying,

“Watching Richard Gere in Pretty Woman at the tender age of six was when I had first realized there was something different about me. I wanted to be Julia Roberts so badly. Kissing seemed like a weird thing to do, but I knew if I was going to do it, it would be with Richard Gere.”

Interestingly, Weir also said he isn't opposed to marrying a female:

“In a sexual way, I’m gay, but I would marry a woman tomorrow if it struck me. I don’t think sex and relationships necessarily have to go together.”

I highly doubt anyone was actually shocked to hear about his sexuality, but I sure admire the way he's handled it on his own terms and in his timeline. I've been a fan of his since he addressed those crappy remarks made by sports commentators last February, when they said he was "setting a bad example." Remember his response?

“There’s a whole generation of people that aren’t defined by their sex or their race or by who they like to sleep with. I think as a person you know what your values are and what you believe in, and I think that’s the most important thing.”

Hear hear, Mr. Weir.

So, tell me: were you surprised to hear Johnny Weir is gay?

HA! About as shocked as I was by Ricky Martin and Clay Aiken. Has Adam Lambert officially come out? I agree, Linda - it's cool that he never felt like he had to talk about it until he wanted to. I'm happy he chose this particular time to do it.

A guy friend came out to me recently, even tho, we all pretty much knew already. I'm so excited for him AND for me. Now we can share a kind of friendship that two women, or straight man and woman could never have.

Good for Mr Weir, tho, I don't think he ever held back anything anyway...
