What a crappy day for relationships. First, there was news of the Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens breakup; now sources confirm that Dexter stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are divorcing.
“Having been separated for some time, Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall have filed for divorce,” their representatives told Entertainment Weekly.
Sure it was a bit creepy at first when the on-screen brother and sister married in real life on New Year's Eve 2008, but that quickly waned as they seemed like such an amazing and strong couple.
Earlier this year Hall revealed that he was fighting Hodgkin's lymphoma. Carpenter stood by his side during his successful fight against it, and has previously said it made them stronger as a couple.
“It’s always felt like an opportunity to get closer and I’m just so impressed with him and anyone who’s had to go through it,” she said. “Every second’s special with him, it sounds corny but it’s true. I’m very lucky.”
But clearly something happened between now and then. Doesn't something always happen? Really, why bother getting married anymore in Hollywood?
Just in the past few months we've seen the following surprising splits:
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker split after some text messages were found. More dirt continues to be dug.
Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus filed for divorce after 17 years of marriage.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who had been together since 1999, have split.
Sandra Bullock and Jesse James are done, which is for the best, but still.
Kelsey and Camille Grammer are divorcing after 13 years, and he's already engaged again.
And on and on ... it's depressing, and so cliche that it seems almost inevitable. You have to wonder if when celebrity couples like the newly married Nicole Richie and Joel Madden or Katy Perry and Russell Brand walk down the aisle they really think they're marrying someone for life, or just for a stint.
Are you surprised to hear that Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are getting divorced?
