President Obama has come up with a scientific project that explores the one deep probing question that's familiar to all Americans. No, it's not about healthcare or the economy ... it's the burning issue that remains unanswered, that unites us as a country in our efforts to understand it.
Hold on to your seats, because it's time to finally, FINALLY find out if ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes really set an invading Roman ship on fire by reflecting the sun's rays off of mirrors.
Who can carry out this experiment, you ask? Never fear, Obama has assigned this critical mission to the only two men who can be trusted to figure it out: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman.
That's right, friends. The POTUS is going to be on Mythbusters.
*runs off to program TiVo while humming "Hail to the Chief"*
In the amusing commercial for the show, which airs tonight at 9 p.m. EST, President Obama sternly informs the Mythbusters hosts to "figure it out and report back to me."
Mythbusters has covered this legend before in 2006, when the team declared the myth busted. Hyneman told CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante that the president explained that he wasn't quite satisfied with their earlier experiments—so they needed to take things full scale this time.
Sweet. Obama-fueled budget, you guys.
If you're wondering why the President is doing this, his intention is to promote science and math education. Monday was science fair day at the White House, and Obama hosted the winners of a range of science and math competitions, from the Intel Science and Engineering Fair to the Team America Rocketry Challenge. He also officially announced his Mythbusters television appearance to what had to be a thrilled, pocket-protector-sporting audience.
Here's the video promo for tonight's show:
