Portia de Rossi has reportedly declined ABC's rumored offer to be part of the first same-sex celebrity dance duo on the next season of Dancing With the Stars.
So guess what? DWTS is supposedly nixing the whole same-sex dance concept altogether.
Apparently the producers feel that de Rossi is, er, more palatable than other potential gay contestants. The powers that be reckon that conservative middle America would be far more accepting of Ellen DeGeneres's lovable wife over, say, Rosie O'Donnell or George Michael or Melissa Etheridge.
Portia's rebuff has the producers claiming that they want to wait and "not rush into creating a same-sex dancing couple just to get attention and publicity."
I know, I know. The last thing a hit television show wants or needs is publicity. They shy from it, you know? Let the viewer find them organically ... that's what they always say. Sigh.
So would, or could, any other out celebs fit the bill? Who is a good gay? Who is a bad gay?
And if there are ... who in God's name decides? What's the criteria?
Honestly, I'm not sure and think the whole notion is bizarro. You can either dance well or not. It shouldn't matter with whom you're dancing and anyone who feels otherwise has more than a dash of homophobia in their soul.
The whole point of the show is to determine the best dancer, period. Viewers should focus on that.
Let's not look backwards people, okay? Let's move forward. One foot in front of the other.
Do you think that DWTS should be open to same sex couples?
