Julia Roberts Stands There and Grins, Gets Paid $1.5 Million

Linda Sharps

How long would it take you to make a million bucks? Well, if you started investing $100 a month right now with an annual return of 8%, you'd have that million in about 53 years. Or you could try and win the $1 million prize from the McDonald's Monopoly game—your odds are a cheery 1 in 186829657.

If you're Julia Roberts, however, you can appear in a 45-second commercial not saying a word, and someone will write you a check for one and a HALF million dollars.

Damn. That sounds way easier than the Monopoly thing.

Roberts has long been one of Hollywood's highest paid actresses, only recently being topped by Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, and Cameron Diaz. I think she's got to be the winner of some kind of bizarre contest of the overpaid, though, with her quickie advertisement for Italian coffee house Lavazza.

The actress appears in the ad with two famous Italian entertainers, Paolo Bonolis and Luca Laurenti, who offer her some of Lavazza's A Modo Mio coffee. Julia (silently) sips the coffee, and (silently) busts out into a robotically toothy grin as the men rejoice around her (while she remains silent).

I confess I haven't enjoyed Roberts in anything since Pretty Woman, so maybe I'm a tad biased, but uhhhh ... here, see the ad for yourself:

What do you think? Worth the $1.5 mill?
