Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey recently got engaged ... just not to each other.
Simpson's boyfriend NFL player Eric Johnson popped the question Thursday, according to Us magazine.
Exciting news, and it's good to see Jess happy, but red flags, they are a flyin'.
First and foremost is the odd timing. Lachey, her ex, just got engaged to his long-time love Vanessa Minnillo earlier this month.
Initial reports were that Simpson was "flipping out" over the news, even though she has denied them and claimed to be happy for them.
Hopefully that's true, but to get engaged just days after all that just seems a little strange, no? Couldn't they have waited a bit?
Plus, Simpson and Johnson have only been dating since May. While they seem happy and sometimes you just know, that's still only six months. Not to mention the fact that Johnson's divorce was finalized just a few weeks ago.
Why the rush to the alter?
Perhaps most concerning, however, are reports that Simpson's friends don't like Johnson and question his motives.
"Eric was never that successful in the NFL, but he's always wanted the celebrity lifestyle," a source told Us. "Her friends do not trust him."
So while we want to be happy for Jessica and finally see her find true love after all she's been through, it's a very cautious congratulations we offer.
Next question: Who's going to announce they're pregnant first -- Simpson or Minnillo?
What do you think of Jessica Simpson's engagement -- good for her, or too many red flags?

Yikes! Too soon, too soon, on all counts.
My guess it that she just wanted something to say too.
It's pretty obvious that's she's jealous, Nick dated his fiancée for what, 4 years?,
before popping the question, and then less than a week later Jessica comes out with her bf of half a year and says that they're getting married too?
Pfft...
She also supposedly bought her own ring. Eeek.
Shouldn't that be yellow flags?
