Gene Shalit, he of the bushy hair and four-mile-long moustache, is leaving his Critic's Corner post on the Today show after 40 years. Forty years!
But rest assured, the 84-year-old movie reviewer is not retiring -- he still plans to do commercial and online work. As a matter of fact, he's already carved out a bit of a television performing career.
He cameoed on Family Guy as himself -- a quick bit in which he mugged Peter Griffin while speaking solely in movie puns.
Shalit also guest-starred as the voice of a fish cum food critic named "Gene Scallop" in SpongeBob SquarePants.
And can you name one other critic who had a Muppet character based on him? Didn't think you could.
So as we say goodbye, here are a few memorable quotes from Mr. Shalit: "Some films could only have been cast in one way: Screen tests were given and the losers got the parts."
And how about: "Her books were put down by most critics but readers would not put down her books."
But my favorite quote of all was directed at me. Way back in the day I was strolling down a New York City street, smoking. Suddenly I hear a voice blaring from across the road: "Put out that cigarette!"
You better believe I did.
