Sam Champion: 'GMA' Weatherman Mourning Father, Not on Honeymoon

6

Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion made a surprise TV appearance in Houston last Friday morning, and many viewers were curious as to why. Without a major news story or event, it seemed unusual for Champion to be broadcasting his weather reports from Houston's Discovery Green—and unfortunately, the reason is now clear. Sam Champion's father,  Lt. Col. James H. Champion, passed away Monday night at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Rumors are flying around the web that Sam went on leave to marry his rumored boyfriend, but it sure seems like a carefree honeymoon couldn't be further from the truth.

Good Morning America senior executive producer Jim Murphy wrote an e-mail to the show's staff today, saying,

After a life of service to his country and his family, Lt. Col. James H. Champion, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), passed away last night in Houston, Texas. He was better known to us as Sam Champion's dad. Sam, his sister Teresa and his mom, Sylvia, were all together with the Lt. Col. at the end.

Sam also posted to his Twitter account earlier today, confirming the death:

THANK YOU! I feel your thots [sic] and prayer LtCol JH Champion USMC Ret..passed last night..WORLDS BEST DAD..awesome guy

Sam Champion has been the weather anchor on GMA since 2006. He will not be on GMA for the rest of the week.

Condolences to Mr. Champion and family. And Sam, I hope the next time people assume you're on your honeymoon, you get to read about it from a peaceful tropical beach, with drink in hand.

Love Sam. As a New Yorker I have watched him for some 20 years or more. So sorry to hear his dad passed.

I am sorry for the pain you and your family and friends are going through. I am a new viewer of GMA. I have only started watching for about a month.

Sam, you are where you need to be right now. I look forward to your return WHEN you are ready. Caring thoughts, A new viewer from Battle Ground, Washington.

Sam, I have watched GMA for many years, and you are one of the reasons I continue to watch it after all the 'main' people have moved on. YOu bring humor, friendliness, accurate weather reporting; it's easy to imagine you as cousin or Uncle Sam.

My condolences to you on the loss of your father. I wish you and your family peace and love at this most difficult time. From, Tammy Marcotte, a faithful viewer who looks forward to seeing your smiling face and hearty laugh every day.

Sam I am sorry to hear about your dad's passing. I just lost my dad in Dec. Of '10. we were extremely close because I lost my mom at unexpectedly in high school. I wish you would reconize you graduated from Eastern and were a KA. You've lost fans because of it. Friends of yours from college tried contacting you but you wouldn't take their calls! I don't think my husband David Cummins would want to call you when we're in NY. I'm sad to see fame changes people! I hope you take time to reflect and remember where you came from. You've lost s Louisville fan!
