I have tried and tried and tried to hate Gwyneth Paltrow. I find her blog (and diet tips) totally ridiculous, and I can’t stand her on talk shows, but dammit, she keeps coming through as an actress -- in silly movies like Iron Man, but also in serious ones like Sylvia, in which she plays one of my favorite poets. I walked into that movie determined to hate it, and came out weepy-eyed and devastated.
So okay, she’s a terrific actress… but a singer? Her upcoming guest appearance on Glee has everyone wondering if she can do it. Welp, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but she can also sing. In fact, you can pick your favorite from three on-screen Gwyneth croon-fests. Care to guess what the three movies are before you pick your fave?
You probably got the first one -- Duets, also starring Huey Lewis as her dad. Here she is, doing “Bette Davis Eyes”:
The second one is a movie called Infamous, a fine flick that suffered from being “the other Truman Capote movie that came out around 2006” (overshadowed by the truly excellent Capote). As Kitty Dean, she opened the film with her rendition of “What Is This Thing Called Love”:
The third, well, is sort of a trick question -- the movie isn’t out yet. Country Strong hits theaters in December but the titular song has already been released on country radio:
And don’t forget, Gwyneth’s hubby is the lead singer of Coldplay, so there’s probably tons of music in the house all the time -- and the most competitive version of home-karaoke known to man.
How do you like Gwyneth Paltrow’s singing voice? How do you think she’ll perform on Glee?
