This weekend Kanye West's new short film/music video Runaway with model Selita Ebanks debuted on the Internet and on television.
It's about 35 minutes of music -- clips from nine of his new songs -- and amazing imagery that's said to represent everything from his relationship with women to the VMA incident with Taylor Swift to him relaunching his career.
Ebanks plays a phoenix who comes to earth and falls in love with West, but ultimately has to burn herself alive so she can be free on her planet once again.
Deep, dark and provoking, critics are in love with it.
Kyle Anderson on MTV.com says it "Solidifies Kanye West As The Greatest Pop Star Of This Generation."
So take a look at West's "Runaway" and try to keep your jaw off the floor. Whether you like it or not, know that you are witnessing the most important pop star of the current generation. He has managed to take popular music and, just like Michael Jackson, Radiohead and others before him, turn it completely on its head while still bringing the rest of the world along with him.
Musician Pete Wentz called it "the single most ambitious 'music video' of the decade"
Fashion blog Styleite says the costuming alone, on which Phillip Lim collaborated, blows their minds. Especially because the rapper is fashion forward enough to mention designer Phoebe Philo.
TMZ called it "30 Minutes of WTF?" but ultimately said the music rocked.
New daddy Swizz Beatz only gave it a 9 out of 10, but said that's only because it wasn't long enough.
"I just want to shout out my brother Kanye for being so brave, that was his expression of our music and culture,"Beatz told MTV News.
The whole thing really is impressive and brings back memories of music videos when they were first introduced, when they were events. The music, the message and the imagery are all deep with meaning and layers, and it's a gripping 35 minutes.
Yes, Runaway just may actually be THAT good. Welcome Back, Kanye.
