I don't normally think much about celebrity breakups, but two recent splits that actually sort of bummed me out are oddly related: Laura Dern and Courteney Cox, who are close friends, are both newly single.
Laura Dern was married to Ben Harper, and I've always liked them as a couple. I've been a fan of her since Wild at Heart, I like his music, and I just think they looked great together (I know: I should totally be a marriage counselor. "But ... but you look so good together!"). They have a 5-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son, too.
Sadly, they're currently residing in SplitsVille. Ben just filed for divorce a couple days ago.
Then there's Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who I liked just because she's so lovely and he looks like a total goofball. They've been married since 1999 and have a 6-year-old daughter, Coco.
Aaaand they're on the outs, too, having announced a trial separation.
Both couples have been together for over a decade and married about five years after dating. They have similarly aged children. Over the years they've often been spotted hanging out together, sharing family birthday parties, chilling in Malibu, and going on vacation as a group.
They just all looked so happy and normal—at least as normal as it's possible for celebrities to look when cameras are hounding their every move.
I can't imagine there's anything salacious behind the coincidental timing of these two breakups, at least not between the four of them (David is rumored to be hooking up with a trashy-sounding waitress, which is tiresome and predictable), but I wonder if them being friends had anything to do with the recent announcements. Supposedly both couples have been separated for a while, so maybe Courteney chose to support her buddy by making her own situation public—especially after rumors started flying that Ben "blindsided" Laura with the divorce papers.
Whatever the reason, I'm sorry to see these folks break up. I kind of thought they were in it for the long haul.
Do celebrity breakups ever faze you any more?
