Kanye West Outshines Taylor Swift Once Again

kanye west vmaIt's with a conflicted heart that I muse over Kanye West's performance of his new song, "Runaway," last night at the VMAs.

We know the dramatic backdrop all too well: Kanye's spent practically the entire year repenting for his notorious interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 awards show. Last night everyone was on the edge of their seat wondering what would go down between the two stars ... and it turned out to be a whole lot of nothing, if you ask me.

Kanye's outburst last year was rude but -- as Aziz Ansari so hilariously pointed out -- also ridiculously overblown. He deserved a slap on the wrist -- ideally from Taylor herself -- but not in the form of some pitchy, boring ballad, which is what went down when she took the stage. We need to move on, but does it have to be in such an unsatisfying way?

Then, to top it all off, Kanye killed it. He really did. His salute to all the scumbags, @-holes, and other various NSFW names was powerful, emotional, and hugely catchy. The rapper might have received some boos at the beginning, but by the end of the song, the crowd was on its feet.

The performance proved once again why Kanye is such a superstar -- not just because his songs are so hit-worthy, but because he's brilliant at making everything about him. Last year the big story surrounding the VMAs was the Kanye-Taylor feud; now, this year, we're talking about it all over again.

Which just goes to show that you really can act like a "scumbag" and all turns out all right in the end.

But, wow, that song was good.

What did you think of Kanye's performance?
