Kanye West won the award for "Jerk of the Year" when he interrupted Taylor Swift at last year's MTV Video Music Awards. But let's be honest: That's only one of several awkward moments at the VMAs over the years. And, with outrageous performers like Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Chelsea Handler on deck for Sunday, there's bound to be a few more.
Here's a look back at those awful VMA moments that made us all cringe:
Remember when Fiona Apple won the award for Best New Artist in 1997 and then let loose a senseless rant against the world? My favorite line: "And it's just stupid that I'm in this world but you're all very cool to me." Awkward!
In 1995, a very smashed Courtney Love crashes Madonna's interview with Kurt Loder and the Material Girl is none too happy about it.
I've never actually watched this video through to the end because it's just too painful: It's Britney Spears in 2007 trying to make a comeback with a wince-inducing performance of "Gimme More." She's nervous, she's obviously lip-syncing -- oh god, just make it stop.
During Nirvana's 1992 performance, bassist Krist Novoselic throws his instrument in the air ... and then catches it with his face. GAH!
Finally -- and this is hurting me to even type -- Michael Jackson accepts the "MTV Artist of the Millennium VMA" -- even though there was no such award. Britney Spears was simply wishing him a happy birthday.
Which is your favorite MTV VMA moment?
