Remembering Aaliyah ... Can You Believe It's Been 9 Years?

Brittny Drye

AaliyahIt's hard to believe that it's been nine years since that fateful plane crash that killed superstar Aaliyah at the way too young age of 22.

Nine years. Wow. It seems like it was only a couple of years ago that my regular MTV programming was interrupted with the sad news.

But as terrible as it is that she died, she will forever be memorialized in her songs. Let's take a look at some of them.

"Back and Forth" was her debut single from her first album Age Ain't Nothin but a Number, which she recorded when she was just 14 years old! The single went on to top the R&B/Hip Hop Billboard chart for three weeks.

After leaving Jive Records because of an illegal marriage scandal with producer R. Kelly (she was only 15 at the time), she signed with Atlantic and made her second album, One in a Million. "If Your Girl Only Knew" was the hit single off the album, topping the R&B/Hip Hop Billboard chart for two weeks.

"Try Again" is probably my favorite Aaliyah song -- totally rocking out to it as I'm writing this. The single was from the Romeo Must Die soundtrack, which was also her first major movie role. The music video won the Best Female Video and Best Video From a Film at the 2000 MTV Music Awards, as well as earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Artist.

"Rock the Boat" was the music video that she had been filming in the Bahamas that ended with the plane crash. It premiered on BET's Access Granted and became the most viewed and highest rated video of the show's history. The single released posthumously and peaked at number 14 on the Hot Billboard 100 chart.

Mind you, she had many more hits, and she was an incredibly talented artist ... I can only imagine where she'd be today.

Are you a fan of Aaliyah's music? What is your favorite Aaliyah song?
