Last night, Miss Mexico, 23-year-old Jimena Navarrete, was crowned Miss Universe.
Radiant in a flowing, simple red gown, she wowed the judges in a violet bikini and spoke of strong family values in the interview portion.
"I do believe that the Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time. We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family."
First runner-up, Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, gave a great answer about the death penalty, which many -- including myself -- thought was stronger than that of Navarrete. I thought for sure the title was hers.
But there was her dress!
It was turquoise and lace and beaded and sparkly and ... anything else you can do to a dress. It was tacky even by pageant standards, and that's saying a lot. And her earrings challenged her head for size.
Whether her attire had much to do with the final vote, we'll probably really never know, but there's no way it could have helped her.
Miss Philippines, Maria Venus Raj, didn't help herself either with her answer to the interview quesion in which she basically said she's never made any major mistakes in her life.
Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell took third place and the title of Miss Congeniality. She was favored to win by many, and I was rooting for her.
Due to the dress or not, the crown now belongs to Navarrette, who is stunning. She intends to spread the love for her native country.
"I want the whole world to know about my country and my people," the Guadalajara native said. "I imagine that they're all going crazy in Mexico right now. I'm extremely proud and I'm sure they're very proud, too."
Navarrete is the second Miss Mexico to take the title. She will receive an undisclosed salary plus living expenses, an apartment in New York, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy, plus an assortment of clothing and jewelry. Not bad.
Should anything happen to affect her reign, Miss Jamaica will take the crown ... and hopefully a stylist with her on her next shopping trip.
Were you pleased to see Miss Mexico win? What did you think of Miss Jamaica's dress?
