Dr. Frank Ryan Didn't Have to Die

Area Where Dr. Frank Ryan Ran Off the Road
Dr. Frank Ryan, Heidi Montag's plastic surgeon, died from blunt force head injury, according to the medical examiner's office. However, it was what he was doing before he drove off the cliff in Malibu that killed the doctor: Tweeting.

Ryan had taken a picture of his border collie on the beach and sent a tweet saying, "Border collie jill surveying the view from atop the sand dune." That cute dog pic cost him his life, and almost the life of his border collie, Jill, who was in the car with him when he drove off the road.

Jill is recovering from injuries to her head, eye, and paw and is receiving many well wishes.

It's illegal to talk on your cell phone or text while driving in California. Oprah also has a huge campaign against the dangerous practice that kills, and I see it on a billboard close to my house every day. Almost 6,000 people were killed last year due to "distracted driving," which includes talking on a cell phone and texting. You can add Dr. Frank Ryan to that list.

Most states don't have laws against driving and talking, but they should. I recently moved to California from New York (talking on cells is illegal in both states) and even with the law, I constantly see people making the aggressive left turn while holding a phone up to their ear with one hand. It's infuriating, especially when I'm taking my kids to day care and school. Nothing you can say on the phone is more important than a human life. NOTHING.

Please don't tweet and drive, it's a ridiculous way to die.
