Kanye West Caves, Joins Twitter

Julie Ryan Evans

Kanye WestFormerly a hater when it came to Twitter, Kanye West is now tweeting with the best of them.

The first tweet from @kanyewest was around noon today,  and by a little after 8 p.m., he had more than 100,000 followers. I was the 105,427th.

He's impressed with his fast following:

"yeah.... we getting about 80 FOLLOWERS A SECOND no exaggeration!!!"

It wasn't so long ago, though, that he took to his blog and blasted the social media outlet and the fake accounts that are rampant on it. From a May 2009 entry:

"I don't have a f---ing Twitter... why would I use twitter??? I only blog 5 percent of what I'm up to in the first place. I'm actually slow delivering content because I'm too busy actually busy being creative most of the time and if I'm not and I'm just laying on a beach i wouldn't tell the world. Everything that Twitter offers I need less of. The people at Twitter know I don't have a f---ing Twitter so for them to allow someone to pose as me and accumulate over a million names is irresponsible and deceitful to [their] faithful users."

How quickly things change ...

And he's fast realizing the power of the tweet. Shortly after tweeting about the fact that he wears Lanvin while jogging, it started trending.

"oh sh#t! Lanvin's a trending topic now hahahaaaaa"

"awwwww man this is addictive I might get in trouble on here!!!!"

He's even regretting his reluctance to join for so long.

"I wish I had a Twitter when I was at the Lanvin store in Paris 3 weeks ago with Jay & B uuuuugh so many missed stuntastic moments."

He seems to be having a social media lovefest as of late. Just yesterday, he visited Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California. While there he was so comfortable he even rapped some new material from his upcoming album atop a table to a crowd of cheering employees.

I love Kanye and am glad to see him in the Twittersphere; a rapper is entitled to change his mind. I hope he keeps the tweets and the tunes coming for a long time.
