Natalie Portman in Black Swan Today, we're getting a first look at Natalie Portman's new film Black Swan and I bet it's going to be great. It's about a talented and successful ballerina who's just nabbed the lead in Swan Lake, and ... it's a psychological thriller. Already, this is a recipe for success in my book.
Even better, I'm a fan of the movie's director Darren Aronofsky, who last directed The Wrestler. I know he really likes to get into the culture of what he's portraying to make it authentic, and apparently he had a bit of a tough time at first with the ballet community. According to Natalie, he was fascinated by "the violent, obsessive world of ballet" -- sounds about right.
Many have been focusing on the on-screen kiss between Natalie and her co-star Mila Kunis, which happens when the two develop an unlikely connection as the film progresses. The film also features WInona Ryder and Vincent Cassel.
The more I read about it, the more this seems like the role Natalie Portman's been working toward her whole life: She studied dance until she was 13, and she's been talking to the director about making this for the past 10 years. This is also outside of what we're used to seeing her in, which should be exciting to watch.
Black Swan is set to premiere as the opening film at the 67th Venice Film Festival this September and I can't wait.
