What a great week to stay home! We’ve got cool girls, bang-bang explosions, and even something for the kids -- all new on DVD. Here are this week’s fresh home-viddy releases!

The Runaways ($16.99 at Amazon)

It’s the true story of a scrappy group of young girl rockers -- including Kristen Stewart as a nascent Joan Jett at her hot-tough-girl finest and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie. This band is a legend. The movie isn’t exactly empowering, and probably not what you want your teen emulating, but it’s a story of the real school of rock -- and hard knocks. 

 

The Losers ($16.99 at Amazon)

How’d I miss this? More to the point, how’d my husband miss it?! It’s the perfect date-night movie: a comic-book origin, stuff blowing up, a rumpled-looking Jeffrey Dean Morgan (from The Watchmen) and Zoe Saldana (from Avatar). The story centers around a wisecracking group of Special Forces heroes who go rogue -- reminds me of Oceans 11, but without the glitz.

 

Cop Out ($16.99 at Amazon)

At first glance, it’s just another salt-and-pepper shoot-‘em-up buddy comedy. But it’s directed by Kevin Smith, stars my secret boyfriend Bruce Willis, and you know, I’d rather see Tracy Morgan than Chris Tucker any day. Reviews are mixed, but it’s probably a safe bet for a night at home.

 

A Town Called Panic ($20.99 at Amazon)

It’s not the greatest stop-motion animation you’re ever going to see, but this zany comedy about a home-improvement project gone terribly, terribly wrong goes to absurd extremes. If your kids like anarchy, random jokes, and somewhat bizarre humor (come on, isn’t that the definition of being a kid?), they’ll dig this -- and you might, too.
