'Toddlers and Tiaras' Recap: A Phrase No Mother Should Ever Utter to Her Daughter

Toddlers and Tiaras

At least two out three mothers on Toddlers and Tiaras tonight and probably 80 percent of all mothers I've seen on the show this season have a penchant for a phrase that I find absolutely deplorable when said to one's daughter.

"Work it, girl!"

Yet week after week, there it is. The pageant moms drop it in conversations and shout it from the audience while their daughter's parade across the stage in belly-baring outfits that make them look like "scary washed up cougars" as @JennaFerr tweeted.

Besides just being so awkward for a middle aged mother (most of whom, if I may generalize, are among the least hip moms I've ever seen) to try and adopt what they consider hip jargon, the whole meaning behind the phrase is just disturbing ... as is everything they do to get their daughters ready to work whatever "it" may be. Once in awhile they spice it up with a "rock it out, girl".

The contestants and mothers this week were mostly more of the same. As the episodes go on, they all just begin to blend together in a foggy haze of hairspray and spray tans.

But 3-year-old Kayleigh really pulled at my heartstrings this week.

When her grandmother called her a diva in training, she replied, "I'm not a diva, I'm Kayleigh."

Touché, Kayleigh, touché!

The poor thing had to sit there through a painful hair weave as her grandmother tried to make her a "spiffed up chicken".

As her mother was putting eye shadow on Kayleigh, the insightful toddler said, "That's for a clown!"

She didn't do so well in the pageant, sitting on stage crying during the talent portion, but still she wanted a crown.

"If I don't win a trophy and a crown they don't get some of my cake," she said.

Then the awards were given.

"I didn't win a crown," she says as big tears run down through the makeup covering her beautiful face.

At least she won't have to share her cake.
