'The Hills' Finale: So It Was All a Sham?

16

Lauren ConradJust as I was about to start typing that The Hills finale was the lamest finale of all finales ...

There stood Brody Jenner waving goodbye to a Europe-bound Kristin Cavallari, with the Hollywood sign behind him. Suddenly the sign started moving, and it was rolled away by crew members, revealing a production set behind him.

Brody started clapping and music was cued: "The rest is still unwritten ... "

MTV's not-so-subtle way of telling us that everything we've seen for the past four years wasn't real?

Quickly, my opinion changed: It may actually have been the best finale ever. What an ending!

We'd all suspected and theorized that the show was scripted, that parts of it were made up or forced. But the truth is, most of us didn't want to believe it. We wanted to believe that people behaved, lived, and loved like this ... and MTV let us.

Only parts of it were real, had to be real, right? There's no way they could have faked Heidi's fake boobs. The world would certainly be a better place if the drama of Speidi was merely a fabrication, but it's just too deep.

So where does that leave us? Right back where we were in the quasi-real world? Which, for good or bad, is where many Americans live anyway.

I don't know whether to feel duped or devoted to MTV producer Adam DiVello for his provocative, if not genius, ending, but I can tell you that it will certainly make us question even more the reality of reality shows.

What did you think of the finale of The Hills?

I feel like it was a slap in the face to fans.

The entire time I was watching the show I thought this last show was 100% scripted... it all fit to perfectly with all perspectives of how love sometimes ends and sometimes begins, as well as and the many ways life transitions.... but the ending with the camera zooming out to reveal a staged setting of "to be continued" romance... that was completely brilliant.

it's ironic. the theme song is "unwritten" which i guess you could interpret to mean that your life is unwritten. or you can apply to the show, which supposedly unwritten, or not.

omg i just saw the end.....now i'm almost upset :( did they have a les deux on the lot too?? a playhouse?? the roosevelt hotel?? ahh!!! well, i do believe the story lines are organic (audrina in love with jerkface jb, lauren hating spencer, etc,), i also believe that all of the lunch dates, the phone calls, and the 'coincidental' run-ins (like when heidi and spencer went to frankie's bday and saw lauren), and 'coincidental' phone calls (we all know spencer and lauren hate each other, but how do the cameras appear on both of them when he randomly decides to call her)....all of that is pre fabricated. i still love the show tho, and always will!!

I LOVED THE SHOW----WHY DID IT HAVE TO END???? I HOPE THEY HAVE SOME SPIN OFFS---LIKE AUDRINA (LOVE HER), KRISTIN (GO TO EUROPE & STAY THERE), LC----LOVE HER, HAPPY FOR LO, SAD FOR HOLLY, AND THE GUYS---WELL BRODY NEEDS TO GROW UP & STOP CHANGING WOMEN LIKE UNDERWEAR, COULD CARE LESS ABOUT HEIDI & SPENCER---AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST---LOVE "THE CITY" & WHITNEY & KELLI ( SO GLAD SHE HAS HER OWN SHOW)----BUT SURE WISH THEY WOULD GET RID OF OLIVIA AT ELLE (WHAT AN IRRESPONSIBLE SLACKER & SHE'S NOT AS GOOD AS JOE THINKS SHE IS. SOMEONE PLEASE CLUE HIM IN!!!! I DON'T EVEN VISIT ELLE.COM BECAUSE OF HER!!!
