Amy Locane, 'Melrose Place' Actress, Charged With Vehicular Homicide

Julie Ryan Evans

Amy LocaneFormer Melrose Place star Amy Locane was involved in a car crash Sunday evening n New Jersey that left a woman dead. She has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide.

Locane, 38, who played Sandy on the original Melrose Place and also had roles in movies Cry-baby and Airheads, hit the passenger side of a 2010 Mercury Milan as it was turning into a driveway around 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger. Passenger Helene Seeman was pronounced dead at the scene; the driver, Fred Seeman, is in critical condition.

The paper reports the actress admitted to drinking wine prior to driving, and that earlier that same evening, just miles from the fatal accident, she was involved in a hit and run. Witnessed said she was swerving and knocking down several mailboxes."

If convicted, the mother of two could spend 5-10 years in prison.

It's such a tragic story, the kind that haunts me. I keep thinking of this couple turning into a driveway that I imagine was their own, after dinner out or a trip to grocery store, ready to sink into the rest of their Sunday evening .... Then all of a sudden their lives are forever changed, taken, ripped apart because this woman had too much to drink before she got behind the wheel.

Then I think of Locane as a mother, and what this incident will mean for her daughters -- ages 3 1/2 and 17 months -- for her husband, for her future.

I wonder why she drank so much, if it was something she did frequently, or if it was just one bad decision. I wonder if the actress had a bad day, was overwhelmed by motherhood, just need to let loose ... and got too loose. Nothing makes it excusable, but I wonder.

More details will come to light I'm sure, but nothing will ever explain such a terrible tragedy. My heart and sympathy go out to everyone who has and will be impacted.

What's your reaction to the news of Amy Locane being charged with vehicular homicide?
