The Tony Awards are looking more and more like the Oscars every year as Hollywood celebs take on Broadway roles. This year, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Denzel Washington, and Scarlett Johansson were big winners, and I was happy to see that they seemed humbled by the awards. In her acceptance speech, Scarlett beamed, "Thank you to the Broadway community [for] opening their arms and welcoming me. By welcoming me into this community, it has been an absolute dream. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be on Broadway, and here I am. It's unbelievable."
Amongst the movie stars, Broadway veteran Katie Finneran also won big for her role in Promises, Promises and gave an absolutely amazing speech.
Other highlights include:
Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison returning to the stage, each performing a little musical number, pleasing Gleeks everywhere.
Respected actress Marian Seldes received a standing ovation when she won an honorary Tony. I loved it when she walked up on stage, posed, and then walked off. No speech is needed when you're that good.
The many costume changes of host Sean Hayes, including but not limited to Spider-Man and Billy Elliott.
