Iron Man 2 (Paramount Pictures)
The sequel to the 2008 blockbuster comic book movie, this action-comedy follows billionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) -- alias Iron Man -- as he takes on government officials and enemies who are trying to swipe his superhero technology, with long-suffering assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and buddy Colonel Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side. All-star enemies and frenemies include Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, and Mickey Rourke.
Mother and Child (Sony Pictures Classics)
Directed by Rodrigo Garcia (Passengers) and produced by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, 21 Grams), this touching tearjerker will have you blowing through the tissues in no time. Starring Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson, this ensemble piece focuses on the many layers of the mother-child relationship -- and especially the heartbreak of adoption. A must-see for its textured performances and timely-yet-timeless tale.
Babies (Focus Features)
An adorable Mother's Day documentary, this charmer follows four newborns in different countries -- Namibia, Mongolia, Japan, and the United States -- through that eventful first year of life. It's a concept so simple, it's profound: By following that first year, the film shows us how similar we are from the start and how our environment eventually shapes our lives. Plus, the main characters are so super-cute, you'd sit there staring for 90 minutes even if the film didn't have a plot.
