Photo from Broadway.comScarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Denzel Washington, and Catherine Zeta-Jones seem more ready-made for the Oscars than the Tony Awards, but these Hollywood stars are shining on Broadway as well.
Proving that star power will sell tickets (and win Tony nominations), this year there are more recognizable names on the nominee list than ever.
Kelsey Grammer (La Cage aux Folles), Jude Law (Hamlet), Liev Schreiber (A View From the Bridge), Sean Hayes (La Cage aux Folles), Valerie Harper (Looped), David Alan Grier (Race), Angela Lansbury (A Little Night Music), Laura Linney (Time Stands Still), and Viola Davis (Fences).
Fela!, a musical about Fela Kuti, a Nigerian activist and artist, and La Cage aux Folles tied for the most Tony nominations with 11 nods each.
I didn't get to see as much on Broadway this year as I'd like, but I did see Christopher Walken killing it in A Behanding in Spokane, and I'm going to pull for him at the main event. Of course, I'd pay Broadway prices to watch that man read a phone book.
Also exciting, American Idiot grabbed a best musical nomination. It goes up against Fela! so I'm not sure of the odds. Still, Billie Joe winning a Tony? That would be rad.
Who do you want to see win on Tony night?
