Photo from Lionsgate/Focus FeaturesHere's a round-up of new movies hitting theaters tonight -- including the action-comedy Kick-Ass, Death At A Funeral and The Joneses. Staying in? We've got your best new DVD pick, too!
Kick-Ass (Lionsgate/Focus Features)
A high school geek (Aaron Johnson) -- a comic book fan, naturally -- decides to turn himself and a few pals into superheroes, despite a total lack of superpowers. Of course, he and his sidekicks go viral on YouTube, earning them surprisingly enemies. Look for Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy and spunky Chloe Moretz (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as the pint-sized but power-packed Hit-Girl. Be forewarned, while it seems like good, clean fun, this is rated R for a healthy dose of violence and foul language.
Death At A Funeral (Sony Pictures)
Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, Luke WIlson, Danny Glover, Loretta DeVine, Tracy Morgan, and James Marsden star in this ensemble comedy about a family that gathers to bid farewell to their beloved patriarch -- only to find out he was on the down low with a pint-sized pal (Peter Dinklage).
The Joneses (Roadside Attractions)
Talk about product placement. David Duchovny and Demi Moore star in this dark dramedy about a family "unit" planted in an upscale community to make their neighbors want what they've got, literally -- taking the concept of keeping up with the Joneses to a whole new level. Smart and stylish, this comedy touches a cultural nerve without being pedantic or preachy.
Defendor (Sony Pictures0
Can't make it to the theater to catch Kick-Ass? Catch this dark comedy starring Woody Harrelson as down-on-his-luck loser who has a psychotic break that leads him to believe he is a superhero -- again, without superpowers. Sandra Oh stars as his very patient psychiatrist, Kat Dennings (Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist) is his long-suffering teenage prostitute pal and Elias Koteas is her angry pimp.
