This is so heartbreaking and extremely scary! We hear about true crime stories but never really imagine them involving a celeb we know who's being considered a "crucial witness." (So crazy.) Ashton Kutcher will likely testify in court against a serial killer who allegedly murdered his then girlfriend.

  • Back in 2001, Ashton's girlfriend at the time, Ashley Ellerin, was killed by Michael Gargiulo -- known as the "Hollywood Ripper."

Ashton and Ashley were supposed to attend Grammy Award parties together on the night she was killed in February 2001. Apparently, Ashton Kutcher told police when he went to pick Ashley up, she never answered the door. The Los Angeles Times reports he looked through the window and noticed spilled wine, which was later confirmed to be blood. It wasn't until Ashley's roommate came home the next day that she was discovered to be fatally stabbed.

  • And now that the suspect is on trial, it sounds as if the actor will be involved.

E! News reports Ashton is "expected to testify" as his testimony could help establish a timeline of what happened the evening of his girlfriend's death. Ashley's murder has been connected to two other crimes: the death of 32-year-old Mario Bruno and the attempted 2008 murder of Michelle Murphy.

  • Gargiulo's trial just began this week, so this is just the beginning.

"What you will hear is that Michael Gargiulo for almost 15 years was watching, always watching," prosecutor Daniel Akemon said during opening statements about the crimes. "And his hobby was plotting the perfect opportunity to attack women with a knife in and around their homes."

So far, no DNA has connected Gargiulo to Ashley's murder and no murder weapon has been found (his lawyers said Gargiulo denies his involvement in the killings) -- but maybe Ashton's testimony will help connect the dots?
  • With the trial expected to last six months, we can't imagine this will be easy. But what Ashton remembers could make a difference in the case.

We know he'll have the support of his family -- including wife Mila Kunis -- along the way. Maybe this will help everyone who loved Ashley get some closure and, more importantly, bring her killer to justice.

We'll be thinking about her friends and loved ones.
