A dad from Houston is under fire after he left his kids alone in the car and the day ended in a horrible tragedy. Adrian Middleton thought his 1-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter would be OK while he shopped at Family Thrift Store. Little did he know that his daughter would make a fatal mistake, choking her little brother to death with a seat belt. Now, Adrian is being held accountable for his daughter's actions and is being charged with child abandonment.

  • Adrian Middleton went into the thrift store, reportedly thinking he took precautions to keep his young kids safe in the car alone while he browsed.

According to ABC 13, the dad said he left his two kids in the car while he went into the Thrift Family Store to look at clothing. Middleton told authorities that he left the air conditioning on in the vehicle, turned on a movie, and gave his kids snacks before he left to go in the store.

  • But while Adrian browsed, his daughter was playing with her brother and got frustrated when he started to cry.

The 6-year-old girl, who has yet to be identified, said that the kids were playing when her brother started to cry and she got angry at him. Frustrated, the girl wrapped a seat belt around her brother's neck.

When Adrian returned to the car, he put his clothes away in the back of the car and saw that his daughter was crying. She told him that she had to go to the bathroom and that she had done something bad. She later told police that she had thought that her brother was sleeping.

Adrian's son was unresponsive, so the dad called 911 for help. He also attempted CPR while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. The baby was then taken to Texas Children's Hospital, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead after he arrived.

  • Middleton has been arrested after the death of his son and now police are trying to piece together exactly what happened.

In court documents reported by ABC 13, Middleton originally told reporters that he had left his kids strapped in their car seats for only 30 to 40 minutes. He also added that he would check in on them periodically through the window as he shopped.

But after an investigation, police found no car seats in the vehicle and surveillance footage showed that Middleton had been in the store for about an hour and 40 minutes without checking on the kids.

Now the dad has been charged with child abandonment, but bond has yet to be set for his case. Meanwhile, his daughter will not face charges because of her age and is now staying with her grandmother for the time being. Child Protective Services has offered its services to the family, although it is not clear if they've accepted it.
