Mother-in-Law From Hell Gunned Down Ex-Daughter-in-Law While She Chatted to Fiancé

Talk about the mother-in-law from hell. Tanya Nikitina, a mother of two, was chatting on the phone to her fiancé in 2010, when she was gunned down by her ex-husband's angry mother, who felt she shouldn't get custody of their children. The ex-MIL was sentenced to life in prison.

Rod Hernandez, 58, tells his side of the story to the Daily Mail Online. He was talking on the phone to his 34-year-old fiancée when he said he heard her scream and a "loud bang."

Hernandez thought she'd had a car accident, so he raced to the parking lot of a pre-school school in Salt Lake, Utah, where Nikitina taught. That's where she'd been chatting with him on the phone just moments before and had told him she loved him.

When he arrived at the school, Hernandez was shocked to see that his fiancée had been gunned down -- and he was even more shocked to realize that her former mother-in-law, 71-year-old Mary Nance Hanson, was the culprit.

Hanson was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison and ordered to serve at least 15 years. Given that she's 71, that means she will likely never see freedom again.

Nikitina and her ex-husband, Dale Jankowski, had two children, ages 7 and 5, when the murder occurred.

Relations between them had been strained since the divorce, mostly over the children. Dale still lived with his mother, who had begun sending threatening text messages to Nikitina.

Hanson decided to become the ultimate helicopter mom by killing the thing that was bothering her son the most -- his ex-wife.

When Hanson was sentenced, she asked the judge if she could receive the death penalty. When told no, the case didn't meet the criteria for that, she reportedly replied, "Well, I guess I didn't do a good enough job then."

In fact, Hanson seemed to have hated Nikitina long before the custody battle began. Hernandez says that once when Nikitina was still married to Dale, her mother-in-law gifted her with a coupon for a feminine product.

This is definitely a tale of a monster-in-law who got it all twisted and seemed to think it was fine to play God for her precious boy. This is the kind of mother-in-law you absolutely dread. She thought of nothing but taking away her son's "owie" by taking the life of her grandchildren's mother.

Says Hernandez: "She really was the mother-in-law from hell."

That about says it all.
