Nanny Has Sickening Reason for Assaulting 3-Year-Old

toddler As parents, it's our worst fear. We just can't stomach the idea that the person we trust to care for our child would brutally abuse him. That nightmare became a reality for yet another family when video footage showed their nanny violently shoving their 3-year-old son so hard "his head snapped back."

Mareike Arbeiter, a 23-year-old German woman, had been hired by a Sherborn, Massachusetts, couple to care for their two children. She had been on the job for just six weeks when the abuse was discovered. The parents became concerned and suspicious when their kids started acting up, so they set up cameras around the house to see what was going on when they weren't home. This is what the father saw on the video:

She grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved him hard enough that his head snapped back and he fell to the ground ... She left the room, and then came back, and instead of walking around him, she stepped over him. He was face down, crying.

The clip was evidence enough for the police to issue a warrant for her arrest. "When the police spoke to her about physically assaulting my son, she was very cold," the father told a judge. "She told them, 'He was driving me crazy.' She had no regret."

Chilling, isn't it? Clearly these parents had no inkling this woman would abuse their children when they hired her. Like so many of us, they likely conducted a thorough interview, talked to references, observed her with the children, and perhaps did a background check. Sadly, even all those steps are not always enough to weed out the crazies who have no business tending to children.

What steps did you take to make sure you had good sitter or nanny?
