Dad Shoots 9-Month-Old Daughter While Cleaning Illegal Gun & Lies About It

colt 45 handgunPedro Rosales, 45, of Brooklyn, New York, was reportedly cleaning his Colt .45 when it accidentally fired and shot his 9-month-old daughter in the stomach. The handgun was unregistered. The baby's mother, Jessica Aguilar, 24, wasn't home at the time of the shooting, however when she returned she saw her baby girl with blood all over and crying. So the couple decided to get on the subway with their bleeding baby and lie about everything.

Everything is wrong here. Why did this man think it was okay to clean a loaded gun in front of a child? Why was the gun loaded and pointed in the baby's direction? Why did he have an illegal gun in the apartment? Why didn't he rush her to the hospital right away?

We can make assumptions. But what is being reported is that the couple got on the subway in East New York where they live with their bleeding baby girl Jessica (named after her mom). They didn't tell that to authorities though. What they initially said is that they were on the subway, got off at Myrtle Avenue, and that's when they realized their child was bleeding. It seems they were trying to cover up the illegal gun at home situation and try to say their baby was shot on the train without them realizing. They headed to nearby Woodhull Hospital and that's when the truth came out.

The gun was found at the family's apartment. Pedro was arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, and acting in a manner injurious to a child -- he also has a history of gun arrests. The child's mom has also been charged with reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

More From The Stir: 4-Year-Old Believed to Have Shot 3-Year-Old When Playing With Loaded Gun

Baby Jessica was shot in her hip and the bullet went out her back. She is in stable condition after being transferred from Woodhull to Bellevue Hospital for surgery. I'm praying for her full recovery.

There have been too many accidental shootings in the home lately. These are preventable situations if people practiced proper gun safety. Many people aren't just questioning why there was a lapse in time from the child being shot to being rushed to a hospital or why this dad was cleaning a gun in front of his child. Some wonder if he was cleaning his gun at all. Right now the case is in the hands of investigators but I am hoping that this terrifying story makes people realize the importance of gun safety and that we cannot ever be too cautious when it comes to kids and guns.

Do you think there is more to this story?
