'Prank' 911 Call for Pizza May Have Saved a Woman's Life

PizzaWe've all heard those crazy 911 stories about how people will call because they're pissed the local drive-thru is out of nuggets, and no doubt one emergency dispatcher thought that's what was happening to him when a woman called 911 and tried to order a pizza.

According to a claim on Reddit for "most memorable 911 calls," the woman called in and stated her address, and asked to order a pizza. He asked if she had realized she'd called 911, and clued in when she replied yes. It turns out that her boyfriend had allegedly been beating her up, and her quick thinking to "order a pizza" may have saved her life.

Here's a transcript of how the dispatcher said the conversation went down:

"911, where is your emergency?"

"123 Main St."

"Ok, what’s going on there?"

"I'd like to order a pizza for delivery."

"Ma'am, you've reached 911."

"Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?"

"Ummm ... I'm sorry, you know you've called 911 right?"

"Yeah, do you know how long it will be?"

"OK, Ma'am, is everything OK over there? Do you have an emergency?"

"Yes, I do."

"...And you can’t talk about it because there's someone in the room with you?"

"Yes, that's correct. Do you know how long it will be?"

"I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?"

"Can you stay on the phone with me?"

"Nope. See you soon, thanks."

The dispatcher said he was able to look up the address and see that the couple had a history of domestic related incidents. The police arrived at the home to find a battered woman and her drunk boyfriend, who was promptly arrested.

I'm sure that 911 operators are trained for this kind of thing, but it's probably not often they calls like this. This chick was doing some level-headed thinking, which isn't easy to do when you're in panic mode -- you know, like when someone is beating the crap out of you.

A man who would beat a woman wouldn't stand idly by while she called the cops, but there's a chance he might let her order him a pizza.

Do you think you'd be able to keep your cool like this if you had to call 911 on the sly in order to get help?
