Baby Dies After Parents Allegedly Leave Her in Crib for 16 Hours

Parents have been charged in connection with the death of their 9-month-old baby, who was found dead in her crib after allegedly being left alone for 16 hours straight while the young parents were partying. Little Avarice Alexander had reportedly been put to bed at 8:30 p.m. and wasn't checked again until the following day at 12:30 p.m. The parents blame SIDS, but cops say that the parents hadn't bothered to bring their child to the doctor in seven months, not even after they apparently noticed a breathing problem.

The mother reportedly came home about midnight but did not check on the baby and instead began drinking with her husband. They later went to sleep. Both are 21 years old.

The mom, Jasmyne, received criticism when, just one day after her baby's death, she set up a GoFundMe account asking for donations for her daughter's funeral. Reportedly, the post said:

My baby girl just passed yesterday. Please if we can find anyway to raise enough o give he a proper burial help please.

But when word got around about the parents' arrests, the baby's aunt took over the account to assure donors that the money would go to the baby, not to the parents.

The couple also have a 2-year-old daughter, who has since been removed from the home. The couple are charged with felony child neglect.

How often you check on your baby depends on how well the baby sleeps, and it's possible that since the pair didn't hear her crying, they assumed she was asleep and didn't want to wake her. Some babies do sleep through the night at this age, but not checking on her for 16 hours is still extreme. That is two feedings the baby hasn't had.

Add in the reports that the baby apparently had breathing problems, and the parents were drinking, and it sounds like a whole lot of possible neglect.

A sad, tragic case.

Do you think they went too long without checking her?
