Mom Who Killed Her Kids Found Not Guilty but Justice Was Still Served

trial, courtTo most of the world, it's an unfathomable crime: a parent murdering their own children. So it's not surprising that Saiqa Akhter got little sympathy. She was on trial for killing her two special-needs children because she wanted "normal kids." It sounds despicable, I know. However, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity and that has a lot of people upset. But justice was still served and here's why.

Medical experts testified that Akhter was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was insane at the time she strangled 5-year-old Zain, who had severe speech problems, and 2-year-old daughter Faryaal, who had developmental delays. Doctors say she believed that she was saving them.

It is clear that she was in no condition to care for kids with those types of needs. That said, there is no excusing what she did. It is monstrous. It is unforgivable. But there is no denying that what she did was insane. A sane person wouldn't kill their kids and try to rationalize it in some way. Yes, she needs to be locked away, but in a hospital or psychiatric facility rather than a prison. It's still imprisonment. And this way, she may get the help she needs.

Akhter will be treated at the North Texas State Hospital and won't be eligible for release without a judge's approval. The hope is that they can help her manage her mental illness and keep her from harming anyone else in the process. And isn't that what prison is supposed to accomplish? It should be two-fold: punish by taking away freedom but also to rehabilitate. I know many people don't care about helping the criminal population, but they should. Fact of the matter is, one day they may be free, back among us.

Do you think this mom should be in prison instead?
