Man Arrested for Putting 2-Year-Old in Clothes Dryer & Turning It On

A man has been arrested for putting a 2-year-old in a clothes dryer. Yes, you read that right. A dryer! Adam Morton, 27, of New Hampshire, has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly placing his girlfriend's 2-year-old son in the clothes dryer. The boy was left with burns on his back, arms, and feet.

A forensic examination reportedly concluded that the boy had been placed in the dryer while it "may actually have been turning" for a "fairly prolonged period of time." A police detective wrote in the affidavit:

Mr. Morton admitted that on August 2, 2014, he put [the boy] into the dryer, shut the door, and turned it on. He stated that [the child] was not in the dryer for very long. He indicated that the dryer made only one revolution.

At a normal degree of heat, the dryer was between 150 and 180 degrees.

The boy's father, who moved back to the boy's town, Bangor, to take care of him and his other children after the incident, says that he was so upset at seeing the child's burn marks that he "couldn't sit through the first dressing."

The boy's 24-year-old mom reportedly returned home from work to find him burned and rushed him to the hospital. Apparently she had recently broken up with the boy's father and had only been dating Morton for a brief time. But she doesn't believe Morton is responsible for the burns and sounds like she blames it more on the child's siblings, telling Bangor Daily News:

Somebody had to do something to him. He was really beat up. He has three older brothers, and boys get crazy and play rough.

But that "somebody" wasn't her boyfriend, she says, blaming Morton's confession on the police and insisting they tricked it out of him. "“It was weeks of pressure," she said.

Yet she says she can't explain why the boy would have such bad burns. And a doctor says that "based on an analysis of the lesions, this trauma could only have occurred inside the dryer."

But even her other kids seem to think it was Morton. Three other children in the home reportedly told police that Morton "does bad things" to the 2-year-old.

The boyfriend reportedly told police that he was remorseful and "regretted it ever happened."

Soooo, what happened here exactly? Either the mom is in utter denial or the boyfriend has been pressured into a confession for a horrific crime he didn't commit. Let the jury figure it out.

The boy's father, however, is convinced Morton is the culprit, and thinks aggravated assault isn't a serious enough charge. "I don't know what world we live in today, but that's definitely ... attempted murder at least," he said.

Ugh, what a horrible scenario. Hopefully these children won't ever have to go near this guy again. Guilty or not, who'd want to take that risk?
