Diaper-Wearing Toddler Drives Car Into Home Then Runs Off to Watch Cartoons

cartoonsWhen we leave our children in the care of someone else, particularly a relative, the vast majority of us assume we don't have to say, "Make sure Junior doesn't leave the house by himself," right? That should be a no-brainer. But clearly, parents in Myrtle Creek, Oregon needed to have that conversation with the 22-year-old relative who was watching their 3-year-old son -- because the toddler managed to crash the family Jeep into a nearby house (wearing nothing but a diaper, mind you) and then ran back home to watch cartoons as if nothing ever happened.

According to reports, police first noticed the boy playing alone in the Jeep at around 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. After the boy told them that his parents weren't home, cops got in touch with Brennan Pennington, the relative who was watching him -- who was allegedly sleeping at the time -- and told her that the child was outside alone. About a half hour later, there was a loud crash across the street and authorities were notified that the boy had driven the car into a nearby home. Apparently, he'd gotten out to the car again, knocked it out of gear, and the Jeep rolled down the driveway into someone else's house. After the incident -- where thankfully, no one was hurt -- the boy climbed out of the car and ran back home to watch cartoons, which is exactly where he was when police showed up at his home. Pennington, who claims to be in the bathroom the second time the kiddo escaped, has been charged with failing to supervise a child.

Details about the boy's mother and/or father remain scant, but if they're like most parents, they were likely horrified to learn that their child escaped twice while they weren't home. Fortunately, everyone is okay, but this situation could have ended really horribly. Imagine a car happened to be passing by when the Jeep rolled into the street? Or the car killed someone inside the home it hit?

I'm guessing it will be a long time before this little boy is left alone again (as it should be). And, wow, gotta love toddlers: The only people on the planet who could follow up a car crash with some relaxing cartoons.

What would you do if you learned this happened to your kid while you were out?
