Wife-Killing Doctor Found Guilty of Something Even More Shameful

GavelPeople really, really suck sometimes. Remember Martin MacNeill, the seemingly upstanding member of society, who was convicted of murdering his wife last November? The former bishop in the LDS church was also a clinical director at the Utah State Hospital, and the father of eight children.

MacNeill was convicted of another crime on Thursday that may be even more heinous than drugging and drowning his wife to be with his mistress. He was found guilty of sexually assaulting his own daughter in the days after her mother's death.

The now 30-year-old Alexis Somers said while the jury was deliberating, "At the end of the day and regardless of the outcome, I will have done everything in my power to protect my family."

The incidents happened in 2007 immediately after her mother's death. She was sleeping in her mom's bed while her dad was supposed to be sleeping on the couch. She woke up to her father "fondling her and kissing her hand," according to the charging documents.

His alleged excuse when Alexis confronted him was, "I'm sorry, I thought you were your mother."

Apparently it happened again two months later while the family was on vacation in California.

Alexis said she came forward to police in 2007 because she wanted to protect her younger siblings, who were still living at home with their father. She had been convinced from the beginning that her mother's death was not accidental or suicidal.

"I was feeling panic, horror, fear that my sisters were not safe," she told the jury. "They were at the home of someone who just murdered my mom."

For his defense, MacNeill allegedly said he "was asleep," and according to court documents, later told police that "a person cannot be held accountable for his actions while he's asleep."

The not-so-good doctor is still awaiting sentencing for his wife's murder, but this sex abuse conviction could now 15 years to whatever he ends up getting.

Do you think there's a special place in Hell for people who murder their spouses and sexually abuse their children?
