2-Year-Old Is Held Hostage in Burglary Standoff

It's bad enough to set out to steal someone's hard-earned possessions. It's quite another to terrorize a family by threatening the life of the most important person in their world: their child.

Raymond Cuny, 32, has been charged with kidnapping and burglary after the South Dakota man reportedly held a 2-year-old boy hostage for more than six hours in a burglary attempt gone horribly wrong.

Cuny was allegedly attempting to burglarize a home in Rapid City when police were called and he was forced to flee. He took refuge at a neighbor's home. While all of the adults and children living there were able to get out of the house, Cuny reportedly kept a 2-year-old with him and used him as a hostage. The suspect was armed, according to police.

For about six hours, Cuny and the police had a back-and-forth exchange -- but their attempts at negotiation were unsuccessful. Several homes nearby were evacuated, and we're guessing this toddler's poor parents were forced to sit by and bite their nails and pray their baby would remain safe.

At about 10:30 p.m., a special response team forced their way into the house and rescued the child, ending the scary standoff.

In addition to the charges he faces, Cuny also had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, according to police. Cops say they don't have any reason to believe the suspect knew the child.

Thankfully, this story has a very happy ending. The toddler is perfectly safe and back with his parents. Not a single gunshot was fired, no injuries have been reported, and the suspect will have to stand trial for what he is accused of doing. Who knows why anyone would do something so crazy and then do something even crazier to get themselves out of trouble -- but the fact that one less criminal may be off the streets should help us sleep better tonight.

Do you think the suspect planned to take a hostage if his burglary attempt failed?
