'The Shield' Actor Michael Jace Charged With Killing Wife in Front of His Kids

Actor Michael Jace became a star playing a religious detective with a tortured soul on the insanely popular TV show The Shield. But he found himself on the other side of the law today when he was charged with murdering his wife -- possibly in front of their two children.

Jace reportedly called police himself last night and told them, "I shot my wife," according to TMZ. He was allegedly home alone when April Jace returned with their children, both of whom are under age 10. A short time later, he fatally shot her -- and TMZ reports that their kids may have witnessed the entire thing.

Prior to Jace making the 911 call, his south Los Angeles neighbors heard gunshots and contacted cops themselves, who assumed they were responding to a domestic violence incident.

When Jace called, he was allegedly instructed to stay on the line until police arrived to find April dead. We aren't sure where his children were at that time -- and it's important to remember police haven't confirmed that his children were actually witnesses. But we have learned they were taken to the police station and then placed with relatives.

The couple was married for nine years. Jace was previously married to Jennifer Bitterman. His most famous role was definitely that of Detective Julien Lowe on The Shield, but if you're not a fan of the crime show and he still looks familiar, there's good reason. He appeared in Forrest Gump and Planet of the Apes, as well as the cop crime show Southland. And he scored the title role in the TV movie Michael Jordan: An American Hero.

It's impossible to understand why a successful and seemingly happy person, who seems to have everything -- including a healthy family -- would pull the trigger on the mother of his children. We still don't know the details of what went on last night right before he killed her, but our hearts go out to the couple's children, who now face the heartbreaking reality of living life without their mother.

Why do you think a successful actor with a family would shoot and kill his wife?
