Woman’s Lie on Facebook Profile May Have Gotten Her Killed

pistolOne time I went on a date with someone who claimed on his online profile that he was 5'11", but upon meeting, it was pretty clear he was a good two inches shy of that. Eh, it wasn't the end of the world, and it didn't make or break the date, but it was a good example of the embellishments people sometimes make on their online dating profiles.

A 22-year-old Indian man got an even bigger shock when he met up with his virtual girlfriend of three years. Upon discovering that his 21-year-old girlfriend was actually a middle-aged mom of three, he allegedly shot and killed her for the lie, then attempted to commit suicide. He later died in the hospital.

Vineet Singh met Jyoti Kori on Facebook, where she maintained the facade that she was a footloose and fancy-free young lady, when the truth of it was that she was a 45-year-old married mom. She even had a daughter the same age she claimed to be -- 21 years old. The bored housewife chatted regularly on Facebook, but her family had no clue what she was doing.

The couple agreed to meet last Friday at a landmark near her hometown. She told her husband, a clerk in the irrigation department, that she was going to visit her parents for a few days. She did go there on Thursday but left early Friday morning to meet up with Singh.

He did not take the deception well, obviously. According to sources, the unemployed young man stumbled into some picnickers, covered in blood and repeating that he was cheated on by a married woman. He was brought to the hospital where he died from his self-inflicted injuries but not before saying, "She kept me in the dark all along."

What the heck was this woman thinking would happen when her virtual boyfriend found out she was middle-aged, and a mother, and married? Which one of those three is the worst to lie about anyway? Was she hoping that he'd forgive her and overlook her major transgression based on her sparkling personality? She could have been the most lovely, enjoyable person in the world, but it doesn't change the fact that she's in a very different place in life than she purported to be.

That was a seriously dumb move, but I doubt she thought she'd wind up dead over it.

Have you ever pretended to be someone else online?
