Gunman in Custody After Opening Fire at New Mexico Middle School

school chairIt's hard to believe that it's happened again. At least two students were taken to the hospital after a middle school shooting in Roswell, New Mexico earlier today. Preliminary reports don't reveal the exact number of possible victims at Berrendo Middle School, but what we do know is that students were bused to a nearby mall where parents could pick them up. According to police, the shooter -- who has yet to be identified -- has been taken into custody. They were first notified at 8:11 a.m. this morning.

While the details of this horrific incident are still emerging, one mother who was on the scene told the Los Angeles Times that she got a call from her 14-year-old son inside a locked room in the school office. He said that there was a person with a shotgun in the school, and that person had been tackled and caught.

I so badly wish that my first thought after hearing about this morning's shooting wasn't "Another one? Really?"

The State Police Public Information Officer Emmanuel Gutierrez says that the threat at Berrendo Middle School has been "alleviated."

It goes without saying that we can all be thankful that this didn't turn into another Newtown tragedy, but that doesn't make the incident any less heartbreaking. The shooting in Roswell comes only a month after a gunman open fired at Arapahoe High School in Colorado, ultimately killing 17-year-old Claire Davis.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families in Roswell right now.

Do you fear for your kids’ safety when they’re at school?
