Death of Soldier's Teen Son Aboard Flight Is a Heartbreaking Mystery (VIDEO)

The cause: A medical emergency that left a 16-year-old boy dead, officials say. According to Spokane International officials, the teenage passenger "regretfully died" shortly after Delta Flight 128 took off. So unbelievably tragic.

The teen's name has not been released, but we do know he was the son of a soldier from the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade of the 7th Infantry Division out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord at Fort Lewis, Washington, a U.S. military official said. But his cause of death is a bit less clear ...

Though it appeared the teen -- who was traveling with mom to visit his dad who'd been relocated to a new base and was on his way back to Georgia for Christmas --  died of natural causes, according to Jim Uttke, deputy medical investigator for the Spokane Medical Examiner.

Hmmm. For a 16-year-old, that explanation really must be a tough pill to swallow ... Thankfully, more information could come from an autopsy, which will be performed Monday.

While knowing more about what caused his death will be something of a comfort, it's still incredibly heartwrenching. This is something no family should grapple with ever, let alone at this time of year. Condolences to the teen's family. Our hearts are breaking for them ...
