Amanda Knox Says She Won't Show Up for Her Retrial in Italy (VIDEO)

amanda knoxIt's hard to believe, but on September 30, the retrial of Amanda Knox for the 2007 death of her roommate Meredith Kercher will begin -- her third trial! An Italian court acquitted her two years ago, but embarrassed prosecutors vowed to try her and former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, and so here we are. This time there will be one significant difference: Amanda Knox will not appear in court for the retrial. She knows she could end up back in prison, but on Today this morning, she explained why she refuses to return to Italy for the trial -- even though she knows everything is at stake.

Amanda says she can't travel for the trial because of school and finances. But the real reason seems to be that she's trying to get personal closure from this chapter in her life and she wants to move on. "I was already imprisoned as an innocent person in Italy, and I can't reconcile the choice to go back with that experience. I just can't relive that."

Can you blame her? I can't imagine going through all of that all over again for the third time. It was worth enduring a second trial in order to prove her innocence. But going through another round while the prosecution tries to save face (which is what I think this retrial is really about) is just not worth her time. I think staying in the U.S. sends a message: Amanda's acquittal should stand, and this retrial is a farce.

I'm not sure how much Amanda's presence would help in this trial, but I still worry for her. Having followed (and written about) this story, I've become convinced that she's innocent and the Italian police and prosecution bungled the case. That's my opinion. So I'd hate to see Amanda end up in prison again. She understands how serious the risk is.

I thought about what it would be like to live my entire life in prison and to lose everything, to lose what I've been able to come back to and rebuild. I think about it all the time. It's so scary. Everything is at stake.

Meredith Kercher already lost her life. Why do we need another young woman to lose hers?

Do you think Amanda Knox should appear in court for the retrial, or is it better for her to stay here?
