Doctor Having 'Casual Sex' With Coworker Accused of Trying to Poison His Coffee

relationship coffee poisonA prominent doctor stands accused of poisoning her fellow doctor/lover's coffee with a compound found in antifreeze. The man is someone with whom she had a "casual sexual relationship," and while no motive has been discussed, it seems easy to extrapolate that perhaps the doctor accused -- Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo -- wasn't quite so "casual" about things.

Her lover has survived, though he is very sick, and obviously 99.9 percent of people who are in relationships where they feel unappreciated wouldn't do something like this. It takes a special kind of sickness to even consider this (from a DOCTOR no less?). She denies it.

Still, if she did do it, it wouldn't be unlike the Jodi Arias case in which a woman who was madly in love didn't feel she was being taken seriously enough, and the results were disastrous. This is the danger inherent in "casual sex" when one person sees it in a totally different way than another.

In no way am I blaming Dr. George Blumenschein (the victim) for what happened. He hooked up with a sick, sick woman (assuming she did what she is accused of doing). But it's pretty common for men to be shocked by what their lovers do and say things like:

"I thought we were on the same page," or "I never thought she would do something like this."

Women can and do have casual sex, but it's far more common for men to do it and not think about what it's doing to the women they are sleeping with. It's entirely possible that this case has nothing to do with their "casual" relationship, but as someone who has helped many a friend through the breakup of something they took more seriously than the other party, I know what a number it can do on your head.

Obviously there is NO excuse for murder or attempted murder. You have to be sick in the head to do such a thing. My heart goes out to a man who likely trusted this woman and thought one thing was happening while it was actually something completely different.

Sometimes you fall in with insane people without meaning to and something you see one way is seen entirely different by them. It can be really scary out there. Let's hope this man makes a full recovery and that if this woman is guilty, she pays for what she did.

Do you think casual relationships can be dangerous?
