Police in Philadelphia say a 28-year-old mother is behind the shocking murder-suicide attempt that left three dead this week, including two small children. According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, Damyrra Jones allegedly shot and killed her two daughters and their father before turning the gun on herself Monday night. Yet despite shooting herself in the head, the mother is expected to survive.

Police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor who reported hearing gunfire coming from the mother's home.

NBC 10 Philadelphia reports that police were called around 9:50 p.m., and when they arrived, they showed up to a scene Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter could only describe as "horrific."

"Officers were actually crying at the scene," she said.

Outside, they found Jones lying in front of her home in the 6300 block of Hegerman Street in the Tacony neighborhood. Her body was on top of the gun she allegedly used to commit the crime.

Inside, police discovered Jones' two daughters, 10-month-old Damaya and 4-year-old Maxilla, as well as their dad, Max Alcindor, 38, who had all been shot.

"Everyone who was in the house was either killed or shot," Coulter said.

All three victims had been shot in both the head and neck, CBS 3 reported.

The father was already dead when police got there, but the girls were still clinging to life.

Both children were pronounced dead, however, after they were rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

Jones, on the other hand, had miraculously survived her self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Even more remarkable? She was alert and talking. In the ambulance on route to the hospital, Jones admitted to committing the crime and told them she didn't want to be resuscitated, according to CBS 3.

Jones works as a bus driver and is being held as a prisoner while she receives treatment, NBC 10 reported. Her sister, who asked not to be named, explained that Jones had been married to Alcindor, until he recently left her.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Jones was officially charged Tuesday with three counts of murder.

Neighbors gathered outside the family's home, which still had children's toys stretched across  the front lawn, while local media captured the scene, People reported.

Mary Munizza, who has a granddaughter who played with Maxille, spoke highly of the 4-year-old.

“She was a very happy little girl, always skipping, playing and smiling,” Munizza said. “Just a very beautiful little girl.”
