Woman Slaps Deputy in Crazy Effort to Quit Smoking (VIDEO)

Etta Mae LopezEtta Mae Lopez's motive was admirable -- she wanted to stop smoking. Her method, however, was more than questionable.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the 31-year-old was desperate to kick the habit. She'd presumably tried other methods, but they didn't work. So she hatched a plan -- if only she could get herself sent to the slammer, she wouldn't have a choice but to stop, since smoking isn't allowed in jail.

So she planted herself outside the Sacramento County Jail Tuesday afternoon, and waited.

Deputy Matt Campoy just so happened to stumble into her plot, and got a pretty big shock.

I stepped the left, she stepped to my left. I stepped to the right, she stepped to my right. I stepped to the left again and she suddenly stepped into me and slapped my face.

Stunned, he grabbed her hands, took her inside the jail lobby and sat her down on a bench -- then she slapped him again, apparently wanting to make extra sure that she got arrested. Once in jail, she confessed why she'd done it. Campoy said, "She waited all day for a deputy to come out because she knew if she assaulted a deputy she would be go to jail and be inside long enough to quit her smoking habit."

That is some serious commitment to quitting. Slapping an officer is wrong, no doubt, but I actually kind of admire this woman for doing what she did. She must really want to quit smoking and was willing to give up her freedom to do so. It's obviously not something we can have everyone doing, but I think she deserves at least a few points for creativity.

And it worked. She was arrested. How long she'll be in the slammer isn't clear, but hopefully it's long enough for her to get a good start on going nicotine free. Oh, and the deputy's brilliant new, self-proclaimed nickname: Nick O'Derm.
