Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: 14 Revealing Facts About the Fugitive Bomb Suspect

As of this moment, one of the suspects of the Boston Marathon bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev (age 26), was shot and killed. Meanwhile, his younger brother, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is still at large and reportedly heading toward Connecticut in a gray Honda CRV, license plates 316ES9. HOWEVER: Conflicting reports say the car has been recovered and he is not in it. Dzhokhar is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities are reportedly closing in. 

Details about both brothers are emerging. Here's what we know so far about the younger brother, still alive and at large, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

  1. Reportedly, Dzhokhar was born in Kyrgyzstan, a formerly Soviet but now independent country in central Asia, on July 22, 1993.
  2. He moved with his family to the U.S. in 2002 or 2003. He is here legally.
  3. Had been living in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  4. He was a student at UMASS in Dartmouth and was seen on campus after the bombing.
  5. Graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 2011.
  6. While in high school, Dzhokhar was a wrestler who was once named athlete of the month. He was also named an all-star athlete by the Greater Boston League.
  7. Was awarded a $25,000 scholarship from the city of Cambridge.
  8. A friend of his describes him as "just a normal American kid."
  9. When contacted in the Russian city, Makhachkala, his father said this of him: "My son is a true angel. Dzhokhar is a second-year medical student in the U.S. He is such an intelligent boy. We expected him to come home on holidays here." NOW he is calling on his son to surrender, saying if he dies, "all hell will break loose."
  10. The Daily Mail is reporting that the brothers' mother, Zubeidat K. Tsarnaeva, was arrested last year for stealing $1,624 worth of clothing from department store Lord & Taylor in Natick, Massachusetts.
  11. He was hired as a lifeguard at Harvard. The aquatic director says, "He seemed like a very quiet, unassuming young man. He showed up on time, watched the water, rotated from position to position fine, got along well with students and swimmers there at the pool."
  12. He had a profile on VKontakte, a Russian Facebook-like social networking site. He listed his priorities as "career" and "money." His world view is listed as "Islam."
  13. NBC reports that Dzhokhar ran over his brother to elude the police.
  14. The media is pronouncing his first name as "Dja-har."
