Jovan Belcher May Have Committed Murder-Suicide Over Paternity Issues

We were all shocked and horrified when Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and mother of his child, Kasandra Perkins, shooting her nine times before driving to the Chiefs' parking lot and shooting himself in the head. Family members had said that Jovan and Kasandra had seemed perfect together and couldn't imagine what had happened. But then details began emerging -- Jovan and Kasandra had been arguing the day of the murder-suicide. Jovan's mother had called 911. Jovan had reportedly kissed Kasandra's dying body before he fled to his own doom. And now comes the most chilling detail of all -- the reported reason they'd been arguing.

Reportedly, Jovan and Kasandra had been arguing over the paternity of their little girl, Zoey, born three months before. Jovan's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, says that Kasandra had told Jovan that he wasn't the father of Zoey, which led to an argument and the shooting.

A source told The New York Post: "The mother believed that there was an issue over whether [Belcher] was the father. She said he [believed he] wasn’t necessarily the father of the child. But the implication was that [paternity] was what the two of them were fighting about -- that the baby might not have been his."

First of all, we're getting this information second and third hand -- Shepherd wouldn't comment on reports. Additionally, Shepherd saying she believed there was a "question about paternity" (as sources tell The Post) is quite a bit different from saying that "Kasandra told Jovan he wasn't the father" (the wording of the Daily Mail). So ... so far this isn't much of anything other than rumor and speculation. Neither Jovan or Kasandra is around to tell us their side of things or what they may have been arguing about.

At any rate, a DNA paternity test should be able to clear things up, provided that Jovan's DNA is still available. Zoey is set to get a hefty payout plan from the Chiefs. This could make the little girl a target for all kinds of nefarious rumors.

Do you think they were arguing over paternity?
