Police Reveal Grisly New Details About the Krim Nanny Killings

child shoes toyPolice have updated the horrible chain of events that led to last week's deaths of Lucia and Leo Krim with new information. On Saturday Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "we believe now that the nanny began to stab herself as the woman entered the room." They had previously thought Yoselyn Ortega had stabbed herself before mother Marina Krim arrived on the scene. Apparently Ortega started stabbing herself in the neck with a kitchen knife after Marina walked into the bathroom and saw her two children in the bathtub. Police say Ortega had already slit her wrists.

Why would Ortega do that?

Maybe she was trying to hasten her demise as soon as she saw Marina. Maybe witnessing Marina's pain and horror sparked something in Yoselyn. It's hard to say what it sparked, though -- she had to have been in the middle of a psychotic episode to be doing what she is accused of having done in the first place.

But beyond the why, it's awful to think that Marina Krim didn't just see her children lying stabbed and bleeding in a bathtub. She reportedly also witnessed their caretaker, who she considered a member of the family, stabbing herself in the neck. So the horror of that evening was even worse for her than we'd thought.

Meanwhile, according to the New York Daily News, Ortega was to be arraigned Wednesday morning from her hospital bed. Yoselyn suffered a broken vertebra (from stabbing herself in the neck) and has been on breathing tubes and under sedation at Weill Cornell Medical Center. She has refused to speak with police though she requested to speak with her family. We haven't seen confirmation of the arraignment or any charges elsewhere. It's very likely that her arraignment and a decision on her charges were postponed in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Ortega's charges can wait a little longer -- she's not going anywhere any time soon.

Do you think it's possible for someone to show no signs of mental illness before snapping suddenly like this?
