Does Jeremiah Wright Matter in This Election?

Jeremiah WrightJeremiah Wright is back in the news again.

The former pastor of President Obama made headlines back in 2008, when inflammatory remarks he'd made in his sermons about racism and September 11th were uncovered by the media. Mr. Obama already had distanced himself from Rev. Wright at that point, but some worried that the pastor's topics had influenced the future president's outlook.

Despite those concerns, Barack Obama won the presidency and Jeremiah Wright faded back into the woodwork.

Until now.

The New York Times has revealed a $10 million Republican proposal to launch a series of attack ads reminding voters of the Obama-Wright connection.

And so this week, we're asking our political bloggers this question: Does Jeremiah Wright matter in the upcoming election?

They'll be giving us their answers all week long. In the meantime, though, what do you think?

What Do You Think About the Student Loan Interest Rate?

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on May 7, 2012 at 9:53 AM

Vector PortalThe Senate is expected to vote tomorrow on whether to debate a plan from the Democrats that would keep college loan interest rates on Stafford loans from doubling two months from now. The bill would be financed by raising payroll taxes on certain qualifying taxpayers that make a lot of money.

Meanwhile, Republicans have their own plan to keep the interest rate from doubling, to be financed by removing a preventive program from President Obama's health care reform plan.

As usual, both sides are at an impasse- and if they can't come to an agreement, the interest rate will double on July first.

That's why we're asking our political bloggers the following question this week:  Should federal student loan interest rates be raised or lowered? Why? What do these rates mean for your child's college education? How do you anticipate paying for your child's education?

Moms Matter 2012Think your vote doesn't really matter in the upcoming presidential election? Think again.

Moms are expected to be a crucial swing vote this November, and both the Obama and Romney campaigns are hoping to win their approval.

Since the campaigns are listening, we've decided to come up with a few questions for the candidates that characterize what the moms of America care about most.

This week, we'll be asking our political bloggers to choose three questions they'd most like to ask the presidential candidates. Next week, we'll let you vote on your number one question from their list. After that, we'll do our best to make sure that question is answered for you.

Check out some of the issues we found moms care about most in our Moms Matter survey after the jump -- then tell us in the comments what you'd like to ask the candidates.

CafeMom Covers President Obama's Speech on Women's Issues

President Obama

Just a few days before the official launch of his reelection campaign, President Obama gave a speech centering around issues that matter most to women and moms yesterday-- and CafeMom was there to cover it.

"Women are not a special interest group," he told a rapt group of several hundred women at the National Issues Conference, hosted by the Democratic National Committee. He went on to say that women comprise 80% of his own household (his mother-in-law moved in to the White House along with the Obamas) and said that both in his personal and public life, "I've got a vested interest in making sure women do well."

See how Mr. Obama is backing up that claim after the jump.

Should Presidential Candidates Use Star Power to Fuel Donations?

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Apr 23, 2012 at 9:29 AM

George ClooneyAs you might have heard last week, the Obama campaign is making a very flashy effort to increase its war chest by entering donors to win a dinner date with George Clooney and the president.

The campaign hopes to encourage more supporters to give small amounts of cash to Mr. Obama's reelection effort, and it's not surprising considering the fact that the president's major donors aren't turning out for him like they did in 2008.

When I wrote about the Clooney connection last week, though, the response from CafeMom members was overwhelmingly negative. Even George Clooney's fans felt that using the prospect of getting close to the Hollywood star in order to get donations for a presidential election was inappropriate.

That makes this a good topic of debate for our political bloggers. This week, we're putting the question to them:

Should presidential candidates be using "star power" to woo the American public? Why or why not?

Tell me what you think in the comments.

Obama Campaign Offers Lucky Winner a Date With the Prez AND George Clooney!

George ClooneyIn the fight for reelection, the Obama campaign is pulling out the big guns -- and it doesn't get much bigger than George Clooney.

Right now, a donation to Obama for America automatically enters the donor for a chance to have dinner with President Obama and George Clooney at George Clooney's house in LA.

How on earth is Mitt Romney going to counter this?

Would you donate to the Obama campaign for a chance to attend this dream dinner party?

Do You Support the Buffett Rule?

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Apr 16, 2012 at 9:04 AM

Tax ReturnsToday, the Senate is scheduled to vote on whether to hear debate on the Buffett Rule. That's the popular term for the Paying a Fair Share Act, which is a centerpiece of President Obama's reelection campaign. Under the Buffett Rule, taxpayers earning $1 million or more per year would have to pay 30 percent on their income in taxes -- that would include income earned from capital gains.

A new Gallup poll shows the idea is catching on among Americans. And since we're likely to hear a lot about it in the months to come, we decided to ask our political bloggers this week the following question.

Do you support the Buffett Rule? Why or why not?

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Apr 13, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Health Care WomenLast week, we asked you to submit your questions on the new health care law for the Obama campaign to answer, and you had plenty of them.

It's not surprising -- not only is the health care law complex, multifaceted, and still unfolding, it's also a central focus in this presidential election. President Obama, obviously, is fighting to keep it in place, while Mitt Romney has pledged to repeal it and allow the states to develop their own health care reform plans.

The Obama campaign reached out to CafeMom recently and offered to answer your questions on the new health care law. After the jump, we have your questions, followed by answers from Obama for America Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter.

President Obama Weighs in on Hilary Rosen Comments

Posted by Lindsay Ferrier
on Apr 12, 2012 at 5:53 PM

CNNPresident Obama is addressing Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen's claims that stay-at-home-mom Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life."

“There's no tougher job than being a mom," Mr. Obama said during an interview with Cedar Rapids, Iowa affiliate KCRG. “Anybody who would argue otherwise, I think, probably needs to rethink their statement."

Rosen made the statement during an interview last night on Anderson Cooper 360. She later apologized, but not before twisting the knife with a Tweet to Ann.
